Partners of the NEA Initiative

What do our partners do?

Country Partners

The Initiative is currently working with three groups of countries across five continents who are implementing full national ecosystem assessments:

Tranche I Countries

In 2017, Cameroon, Colombia, Ethiopia and Viet Nam joined the NEA Initiative to undertake a full national ecosystem assessment. They will officially launch their NEAs in 2021, and will go on to the final stage of the assessment process: using assessment findings to support policies and decisions across relevant sectors.

Tranche II Countries

In 2018, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cambodia and Grenada joined the NEA Initiative to undertake a full national ecosystem assessment. They are currently in the second stage of their assessment process: expert evaluation of existing knowledge on the status, trends and dependencies on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Tranche III Countries

Dominican Republic, Malawi and Thailand joined the NEA Initiative in 2020 to undertake a full national ecosystem assessment. They are in the process forming their assessment teams and are embarking on the first stage of the assessment process: scoping – where they will engage with stakeholders to determine key policy questions that will be addressed by each country’s NEA.

Additional support

The NEA Initiative is working with other countries to support them with the scoping stage of the assessment process. Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe are currently producing scoping reports which will help them determine their needs for a full national ecosystem assessment.

Project Partners

The National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative (NEA Initiative) is hosted by UNEP-WCMC and implemented in collaboration with UNDP and UNESCO through the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net).
